Just 25 minutes ago, an earthquake of 5.1 magnitude hit near Punta Cana, Dela Altagrasia, the Dominican Republic’s region. The tremor was recorded on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at 12:11 pm local time at a mid-depth of 114.90 km below the surface at about noon.
The event was submitted by the US Geological Survey, the first seismological institution to report it.
Our surveillance service has identified a second report from the German Centre for Geoscience Research (GFZ) that listed Quake at magnitude 5.0. Other institutions reporting the same earthquake include the European Regional Earthquake Centre (EMSC) in MAGNITUS 5.1, Columbia Geological Services (SGC) in Magnitude 5.1, and the Institute for Seismology Research (IRIS) in Mignitude 5.1.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are generally recorded by multiple agents and results may vary. This is done after the first report is often more accurate.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the earthquake should not have caused any major damage, but it was probably felt by many people as optical vibrations in the area of the epicenter.
It is possible that a weak shaking was felt at Punta Cana (100,000 pop), located 31 km from the epicenter.
Other towns and cities near the epicenter where the earthquake could have been felt as a very weak shaking include La Romana (Pop. 208,400), Santa Cruz del Seybo (Pop. 23,500) 100 km, San Pedro de Coris (Pop. 217,900) 122 km away (Pop. 217,900) 122 km and hat
