Authorities at Punta Cana International Airport in the Dominican Republic’s La Altagracia region have successfully thwarted the smuggling of a large shipment of cocaine bound for Switzerland.
Authorities said in a statement that during a routine security check, X-ray screening revealed suspicious discrepancies in two suitcases near the airport’s boarding area.
Based on this information, authorities conducted a thorough search of the package in the presence of a prosecutor to ensure compliance with the law.
The search uncovered four backpacks hidden inside two suitcases, containing a total of 39 packages of a substance believed to be cocaine.
A preliminary count put the amount of illegal drugs seized at approximately 41 kilograms.
“According to tags attached to the luggage, the two suitcases were destined for Zurich, Switzerland, from the Punta Cana terminal,” authorities reported.
Following this significant seizure, the Ministry of Public Prosecution and the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) have launched a comprehensive investigation.
Their primary objective is to discover the origins of this failed international drug trafficking operation and to arrest and prosecute all individuals involved in the incident.
