Argentina’s national airline, Aerolíneas Argentinas, has stopped flying between Buenos Aires and New York, leaving the market solely served by American Airlines.
The airline has suspended its three-times-weekly connection between Buenos Aires’ Ezeiza Airport (EZE) and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) using Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
The change comes after 11 years of operations that were interrupted only during the pandemic, and means Aerolíneas Argentinas will now only offer one route to the United States, with two flights a day to Miami International Airport.
With American Airlines’ withdrawal from New York, the airline will be the only airline to operate nonstop flights between Buenos Aires and New York, operating a daily EZE-JFK route with Boeing 777-200/200ER aircraft.
However, Delta will join the route’s oneworld alliance membership from the start of the 2024-25 winter season and plan to resume daily service using its A330-900 aircraft.
Aerolíneas Argentinas first served New York in 1950, and the city remained a fixture in the airline’s network until 2008. Routes from Buenos Aires were restored in 2013, two years after the airline signed a codeshare agreement with Delta Air Lines. But Aerolíneas Argentinas has now chosen to consolidate its international network to focus on more profitable destinations.
The new routes to be launched include a daily route between Santiago Buenos Aires Airport and Rio de Janeiro, as well as flights between Santiago, Buenos Aires and São Paulo, both of which are scheduled to begin in October and operate daily.
The airline is also expanding its presence in the Dominican Republic, adding three routes and increasing the frequency of one more. The Cordova-Punta Cana route will begin operating with twice-weekly flights on September 13, followed by Tucuman-Punta Cana and Rosario-Punta Cana once-weekly flights from January 2025. The EZE-Punta Cana route will also increase from six to seven weekly flights.
