As golf restarts, the 2024 PGA Tour season will kick off with a new format. As per usual, the Sentry, no longer the Tournament of Champions, will kick off the season on the Plantation Course at Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii.
With new investment in the PGA Tour coming soon, we will also see a new format for the PGA Tour that we have already experienced with the FedExCup Fall Tournament, no more watching the entire season together as it will all be played in 2024, including the elimination of designated events and their replacement with signature events.
So what’s on the PGA Tour schedule for 2024? What new events are planned for the calendar? How will the new format work? And when will the major championships be held? Let’s take a look at what you need to know as a golf fan to keep up with this season.
The new PGA Tour format will include 36 events, including eight signature events (more on that below), THE PLAYERS Championship, four major championships and three FedEx Cup playoff events.
Most importantly, the FedExCup Fall Tournament determined the final 125 players who have earned full PGA TOUR status for the 2024 season. These players will be eligible to play in any of the 18 regular full-field events in a PGA TOUR season or five additional events. Meanwhile, the FedExCup Playoff race will start with the first event of the year, the Sentry, and all players who qualify on tour will start with 0 points in the standings.
The top 70 players in the FedExCup standings at the end of the Wyndham Championship will qualify for the first playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship. As with last year, the top 50 players after St. Jude advance to the BMW Championship and the top 30 players after that event advance to the stepped-scoring start for the Tour Championship.
Simply put, a Signature Event is the new name for the designated events that were allowed on the PGA Tour last season, although the qualifications for Signature Events for the 2024 PGA Tour season will be slightly different.
The field size for major events is between 70 and 80 players, with only the Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational and Memorial having a cut (tied with the top 50) and no cut for the other events. The winner also receives 700 FedEx Cup points.
Importantly, the top 50 players from the PGA Tour’s 2022-23 FedEx Cup season will qualify for all signature events in 2024, along with “The Next 10,” those who finished 51-60th in the FedEx Cup fall standings prior to entering the Sentry. After the Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis, “The Next 10” will be the top 10 players who are not exempt in the current standings.
Five more spots in the Signature Events, known as “The Swing Five,” will also be qualified for these events by the top five in FedEx Cup points earned in the full-field tournaments between the Signature Events.
Now let’s take a closer look at the 2024 PGA Tour schedule.
