La Altagracia – La Altagracia state senator Rafael Baron Durcq (Choritín) has proposed a bill to upgrade the municipal district of Veron Punta Cana to municipal status. According to the 2022 National Population and Housing Census, Veron Punta Cana is the largest municipality in the country with a population of 138,919 people, outnumbering 138 of the existing 158 municipalities.
Baron Druc stressed that given the large population of Beron Punta Cana, the Dominican government needs to assess the resources needed to support the Higuey City Council. He believes that this proposal is consistent with Law No. 176-07 of July 17, 2007, which outlines the criteria for the creation of new municipalities.
The law requires entities to have a defined geographical, social, economic and cultural identity, along with the infrastructure and conditions necessary for sustainable development.
Veron Punta Cana already has important infrastructure in place, including 16 bank branches, a health center, secondary and public schools, a power plant, a church, a police station, a civil registration office, and various commercial facilities. In recent years, the city has also developed medical tourism, further enhancing its status as a municipality.
