Where will American travelers head this winter? Not a cold-weather destination, according to a new TripAdvisor report.
The travel giant has released its 2024-2025 Winter Travel Index, and one destination that stands out among international travel destinations is Cancun in Mexico’s Caribbean Sea.
More American travelers are visiting Cancun this winter than anywhere else, followed by Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, another Caribbean hotspot, in second place.
Another Mexican Caribbean destination, Playa del Carmen (home of the soon-to-be-rebranded Thompson Playa del Carmen, whose transformation we reported on a few weeks ago) came in at number four.
Three other Caribbean vacation spots made the top 10. Aruba, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and another destination in the Dominican Republic, Bavaro (technically also Punta Cana, but I won’t put too fine a point on it).
The report is based on two data points: a customer sentiment survey conducted earlier this fall and traffic data from the TripAdvisor platform.
Traffic in Cancun has been on the decline in recent months, perhaps an indication that the region will recover during the all-important winter season.
As for Punta Cana, that’s not surprising. The Dominican Republic remains the most popular destination in the Caribbean and continues to break tourism records this year.
