Story by Kathy Backworth
As the sun came up, I walked the quiet trails of Sunscape Coco Punta Cana Resort. On my way to the resort’s fitness center, I passed an empty water park, a dimly lit spa, a quiet pool with an empty waterslide, and a closed food truck.
This was in stark contrast to the walk I had taken the previous day on a sunny afternoon. Then, when I arrived, the guide at the resort took me down a similar path. But it was busy with families heading to the main pool, one of the many restaurants, or the beckoning beach of Bavaro.
The water park was splashing and the waterslides were full of kids. Some adults walked down the winding path to the crystal clear pool.
It is a resort with many dual aspects, being both a playground for children and a playground for adults.
Everyone can enjoy it
Located in the Dominican Republic, Sunscape Coco Punta Cana is a renovated resort with views of Laguna Bavaro Reserve that opened in November 2023.
This is the second Sunscape in Punta Cana and is part of the Hyatt family. Just a 4-hour non-stop flight from Toronto and a 20-minute drive from the airport.
The resort is popular with Canadians (particularly from Ontario and Quebec) as well as Germany and other European countries.
Family fun is a top priority at this property, but we all know that if mom and dad (and maybe grandma and grandpa) aren’t happy, no one can have fun either.
For children, there’s a Kids Club (for explorers aged 3-12) and a ‘Core Zone’ for teens, where children can gather to play games, play pool and explore the resort with trained staff. You can go on adventures in the surrounding area.
On the adult side (yes, there’s an “Adults Only” zone), there are several beach and hotel bars, as well as a classic swim-up bar and a 24/7 bar.
When you visit the spa, you can settle into a private room, far from the screaming children and right next to the hydrotherapy pool.
For those looking for a little more action, there’s an on-site casino and a 400-seater nightclub.
Want to see more action? I wandered into a sports bar and noticed a picture of a Canadian team hockey player on the wall.
Well done, Sunscape.
family and couple time
At Sunscape Coco Punta Cana, we recognize that there is family time and couples time, and while most restaurants cater to both needs, Un-Wined Cellar offers more kid-friendly time. A unique adults-only dining experience within the reach of (but super popular around the world) the Le Petit Chef Experience.
The aforementioned food trucks have no age boundaries. Every time I pass by, I see different people lining up.
Additionally, there is a Teppanyaki restaurant (Chopsticks, reservations required), Italian, Amazonian, Mexican, seafood, and two buffet restaurants open to all. We also have tacos, pizza, pastries and more. Hungry kids, big or small, come in handy.
Choose from a variety of rooms (1,059 rooms and suites), including three-bedroom suites for families and groups, with ocean views, poolside or quiet rooms.
Adults-only accommodations are conveniently located next to the Kaleidoscope Buffet and are available exclusively to Sun Club members (including family members). Conveniently located next to the adults-only pool and 24/7 Magic Bar.
There is entertainment throughout the day and night, and one night even pouring rain didn’t interrupt the fun as the magic show moved seamlessly from the outdoor theater to the spacious lobby.
But what about that fitness center? I visited three days in a row, and each time I was greeted by a pleasant staff with a wide variety of stationary bikes, treadmills, ellipticals, free weights, and weight machines. All are clean and in good condition.
I wanted this before heading back to the Snack Zone food truck, conveniently located on the walkway back to my room.
