This holiday season, more Americans than ever are traveling and taking to the skies thanks to a powerful combination of family reunions, winter escapes, lower fuel costs, expanded flight options, and newfound confidence in travel. While Orlando stands out as the most popular destination in the United States for its warm climate and iconic tourist attractions, other globally popular cities such as Cancun, Punta Cana, Cozumel, San Juan, Nassau, and Rome attract travelers with their blend of sunny beaches, rich culture, and seasonal celebrations.
As the festive period begins, holiday travel is gaining momentum across the country, with this season set to break all previous year-end records. An estimated 122.4 million Americans are expected to travel at least 80 miles from home between Dec. 20 and Jan. 1, highlighting the scale of demand and underscoring the continued expansion of the U.S. travel environment.
This number represents a 2.2 percent increase compared to last year’s record number of holiday travelers of 119.7 million, according to projections released by AAA. This steady increase highlights that travel is regaining its place as a core part of holiday traditions, driven by strong demand for family reunions, leisure travel, and winter escapes.
Cars remain the primary choice for travel
Road trips continue to define the American vacation travel experience. Of the 122.4 million people expected to travel nationwide, about 109.5 million are expected to travel by car. This represents a 2% increase compared to last year, reinforcing driving as the most popular and practical way to travel during the busy holiday season.
AAA attributes the car’s continued popularity to its flexibility and affordability. Travelers can set their own schedules, avoid airport crowds, and easily transport souvenirs and luggage. This trend is exacerbated by lower fuel costs, with average gasoline prices remaining below $3 per gallon in many parts of the country, making long drives more attractive than in previous years.
However, the rapid increase in road travel also brings challenges. AAA reported responding to more than 860,000 roadside assistance calls during last year’s holiday season, highlighting the importance of vehicle preparedness during heavy traffic and winter weather conditions.
Air travel continues to increase
Although cars account for the majority of total travelers, air travel is also showing significant growth. An estimated 8 million Americans are expected to fly to vacation destinations this season, representing a 2.3% increase compared to 2024.
Major airports are preparing to maintain passenger numbers, especially in the days leading up to Christmas and New Year’s Day. Travelers are advised to anticipate terminal congestion, potential weather delays, and limited availability on peak flights, especially to popular leisure destinations.
Despite these challenges, air travel remains the preferred option for long-distance and international travel, allowing travelers to make the most of their time in a destination during busy holiday periods.
Florida emerges as a major travel hub
Florida is once again playing a central role in vacation travel patterns. About 7.5 million Floridians are expected to travel during the holiday period, nearly 244,000 more than last year. Approximately 6.7 million of these travelers are expected to arrive at their destinations by car.
The state’s extensive highway system, mild winter climate, and abundance of tourist attractions continue to make it both a prime departure point and a major destination for vacation travelers across the country.
Orlando tops domestic destination
As for where Americans are headed, warm-weather destinations are clearly in demand. Theme parks, family-friendly attractions, and mild winter temperatures make Orlando a top domestic travel destination this holiday season.
Florida dominates the nation’s top 10 list, with Fort Lauderdale at No. 2, Miami at No. 3 and Tampa at No. 6. These cities continue to attract visitors throughout the winter for their beaches, entertainment, and seasonal events.
Overseas travel highlights beaches and cultural experiences
Outside of the United States, travelers are drawn to a mix of tropical and cultural destinations. Cancun and Cozumel in Mexico, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, San Juan in Puerto Rico and Nassau in the Bahamas are among the most popular international choices, reflecting the strong demand for sun and sea vacations.
Rome, Italy is also ranked among the top destinations in the world and is attractive to travelers interested in history, cuisine, and traditional European festivals.
Travel tips you need during the busy season
With record numbers expected, preparation is key to a smooth move. AAA recommends drivers check tire pressure, battery health, and fluid levels before setting off to reduce the risk of failure on peak travel days.
Air travelers are advised to check flight status before departing for the airport, arrive earlier than usual to account for security and boarding delays, and pack essential items such as medication in carry-on luggage.
As millions of Americans take to the roads and skies this holiday season, it underscores a newfound confidence in travel and the eternal importance of gathering, celebrating, and exploring. Whether it’s driving across state lines or flying overseas, the journey itself is once again an important part of the vacation experience.
With the holiday season at its peak, the surge in travelers reflects a new enthusiasm for connection, celebration, and exploration in the United States and beyond. This record period highlights the resilience and growing confidence of travelers, with millions choosing to drive or fly, popular destinations benefiting from strong demand and travel infrastructure operating at full capacity. Whether heading to a family gathering, a warm-weather escape, or an international cultural hub, Americans are reaffirming that travel is an essential part of their vacation experience, setting a strong tone for the year ahead.
