WILMINGTON, N.C. — There was a festive atmosphere at Wilmington International Airport as it marked a significant milestone with the first commercial international flight to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The celebratory event included the raising of a colorful Dominican flag and a ceremonial spray by a fire engine, setting the tone for the holiday season.
“It’s a great way to start the holiday season on Christmas Eve,” said Courtney Goff, communications manager for Avero Airlines. “You don’t have to cook or clean. You can go to a warm Caribbean beach.”
Avero Airlines, which began operating from ILM in June 2022, aims to differentiate itself from other airlines by offering flights to often overlooked destinations, such as New Haven, Conn., a viable alternative to the busy New York City airport. Goff explained, “Avero also doesn’t fly every day, and some of our flights are completely seasonal. Unlike other airlines that offer everything at once, we want our customers to choose what’s important to them.”
The airline’s unique fare structure seems to resonate with travelers. Avero has completed more than 5,000 flights in three years of operation and plans to expand to 15 nonstop flights by 2025. However, the entry of Breeze Airways into some of Avero’s markets will further increase competition.
“Obviously there were some airlines that jumped on routes that we already fly,” Goff acknowledged. “We are working with the network to enable the two airlines to utilize the network.”
This growth came with challenges. Avero faced backlash in November from protesters who criticized the company for its involvement in government contracts related to the deportation of illegal immigrants. In response, Goff emphasized that Avero provides services to a variety of government agencies, including the Department of Defense and VA Airplanes, demonstrating that its activities extend beyond a single administration.
Looking to the future, Avelo has ambitious expansion plans. Goff announced that the airline plans to order 50 new Ember Air 195-E2 aircraft. The aircraft is expected to be more cost-effective due to its layout, which eliminates the middle seat. This expansion will facilitate the addition of routes and enhance service from Wilmington.
Wilmington International Airport Director Jeff Burke expressed optimism about the synergies between Avero’s growth and the airport’s expansion. “We think they’re great partners and we’re happy to have them be a part of our community,” Burke said.
As Avero continues to grow, Goff expects the airline to create more jobs locally. “We have two planes in Wilmington, and the pilots, flight attendants, and customer support representatives all sleep together overnight,” she explained. “When we first started, we employed about 20 to 30 people. Today, we have a crew of nearly 50 people and continue to hire.”
The launch of international service is not only a milestone for Avero, but also an exciting development for travelers in and around Wilmington, increasing regional connectivity and job opportunities.
