SPAIN – The train accident that occurred in Ademus, in the southern Spanish province of Córdoba on Sunday, January 18, has killed 39 people so far and has significantly disrupted the schedule of Fitur 2026 ahead of its official opening, although the trade fair itself is still scheduled to go ahead. The tragedy has resulted in the cancellation of numerous award ceremonies, social events, dinners and forums scheduled for this week as the tourism industry responds with solidarity and respect for the victims.
Several organizations and companies have already announced cancellations. Preferente Group has canceled its awards ceremony scheduled for January 21, when executives from Jet2, Iberia, Garden Hotels and Punta Cana Group will be honored. Exceltur also canceled a tourism forum scheduled for January 20 at IFEMA, saying the decision reflected the industry’s sensitivity to the national mourning caused by the tragedy.
Additionally, the Andalusian regional government, several state authorities, and railway companies Iryo and Renfe have canceled official events and presentations. Trade fair organizers said Fittoor could not remain indifferent to the incident and said they were closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with authorities. The trade fair is scheduled to open on January 21st, but will be held without the usual festival atmosphere, as business activities have taken a backseat in this tragic climate.
