California’s Bay Area will receive new non-stop flights to Central America.
Colombian airline Avianca announced Friday that it will launch new nonstop flights from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (GUA).
This will be a new seasonal route, meaning it will operate during the summer months.
Star Alliance member Avianca is no stranger to Northern California.
The Bogotá-based airline currently flies between San Salvador, El Salvador, and San Francisco, the main West Coast hub of its US partner United Airlines.
Avianca’s SFO-GUA route will launch on June 1st and run until August 31st.

The itinerary will be decided like this. As you can see, eastbound flights depart in the morning and arrive in the Guatemalan capital in the early afternoon. Westbound red-eye service:
SFO-GUA: Departs at 7:45 a.m. and arrives at 2:15 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday (all local times)

GUA-SFO: Departs at 1:20 a.m. and arrives at 6:25 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday (all local times)
Please note that Avianca has a one-stop service itinerary to El Salvador International Airport (SAL), so the same aircraft flying from SFO to GUA will still arrive at SAL.
However, Avianca will also continue to operate nonstop flights between California and El Salvador, a spokesperson confirmed.
Travelers who want to book Avianca flights with points and miles can transfer 1:1 to the airline’s Avianca LifeMiles program from four major transferable rewards programs:
You can also search for partner benefits through the United MileagePlus program and other Star Alliance partners, such as Air Canada Aeroplan.
Avianca will operate the SFO-GUA service with a 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft. The aircraft includes Avianca’s Business Class Americas cabin with seats with more room and legroom in the first three rows.
However, Avianca surrounds its higher seat options with more premium soft products, including an in-flight amenity kit.
“The launch of this route is part of Avianca’s strategy to meet customer demand for more connectivity options between key destinations and continue to strengthen our international network with efficient and reliable operations,” Alejandro Benitez, Avianca’s senior vice president of corporate development, said in a statement on Friday.
Avianca continues to expand its presence in North America. Total departures to the U.S. increased by 12% in 2025 compared to 2024, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium.
It wasn’t just new flights. Last spring, the airline partnered with TAP Air Portugal to open a new airport lounge in Miami.
